Somewhere on this page I’ll include my ‘official’ Mission Statement (translation: boring) but before I get to that I want to just touch on some points.
I know you get it. This is a website about travel. It’s one of about a bazillion other websites out there discussing the same topics. Imagine my side where I’m trying to figure out ways of making my website stand out from the rest of them in the deep sea known as the internet.
But here’s why mine is different.
I’m a bit quirky.
My mission
The idea behind this entire worldwide web venture of mine is to give you an interesting and unusual look at travel destinations ( and food choices too). I’m not talking about the same vacation spots everybody else goes to and the same five-star restaurants you can search out on your favorite food rating restaurant portal.
I’m going to take you places you’ve probably never been to or heard of.
For example, have you ever visited Elbow, Saskatchewan on the Fall? How about chewing on deep-friend termites while hiking in the Australian Outback?
There’s going to be reviews. I need to tell you about the places so you know it’s not some giant advertising scheme but me actually telling you my experiences in these places. I’m not going to pretty it up, either. If I didn’t like sleeping on a bamboo mat on a dirt floor next to a bunch of scorpions, I’m going to say so. If the breakfast meal looks like the inside of a dumpster after pasta night clean up, I’m going to tell you about it.
There’s going to be travel guides and recommendations. If I can steer you into the direction of a special deal or discount, I will. At the Sunset Motel in Waki Waki, Thailand be sure to say you are paying cash and that it’s US currency. That will give you a cut on the room rate and reduce the number of armed insurgents sharing the same room.
There’s going to be some do’s and don’ts. For example, don’t eat the yellow snow in Northern Greenland. There are more than dogs, bears and seals up there.
There’s going to be tips on food to try. If you spend any time in Ecuador, be sure to ask for the House Special at Anita’s House of Unusual Meat Products. If you time your visit between visits from the militia you could end up with a real tasty lump of Yak Steak.
There’s going to be an activities list of things to do that you may have never done before. When visiting the Volcanoes in the South Pacific, be sure to surf the lava flow on a fireproof piece of metal.
So hopefully you get the idea that I want you to enjoy your visits here and gain some knowledge about tons of different stuff.
As promised…here is my official (boring) Mission Statement:
My Mission here is to gather tips and advice for travelers to plan an effortless vacation. You will find unbiased food and travel or camping guides, detailed reviews that will help you with your decision making so you can chose the right combination of attractions and dining spots to match your tastes and budget. You will also find tips to get cheaper flights, our hotel recommendations and much more thanks to my great contributors such as Bill, Don, Eva and Jennifer. I want you to have a great vacation with intelligent choices made before you set off on your holiday. Blah-blah-blah.
Why Mr Vacation?
Well, I do have to admit I can be a control freak. Everytime I travel I like to plan everything from A to Z beforehand. To do so, I read, search, analyse, compare everything I can find about the place or country I intend to visit… My family and my friends know how detail oriented I can be, so they usually ask me travel ideas, activities or places to visit when they plan their vacation…. One day, a friend of mine called me Mr Vacation. I found it pretty fun so I kept it for this website. ( otherwise, it would have been Mr control freak….. not sure it would have been a good idea haha)
About Me and 6 Modes Of Transportation
This is the dreaded About Me part of the website. I know, I know you’re probably saying, “Not another boring bio about someone that I’m only going to read once.” I get that.
In fact, that is why I wanted to tell you a little bit about me in a very different – and hopefully – entertaining way.
So, here it is.
I am Chris, a travel blogger (doesn’t it sound cool?) during my free time… Yep, we all have to work to earn a living.
Obviously I like to travel. (Who would not?)
I also like to travel on different modes of transportation.
To avoid having the dullest “About Me” page on the internet, I thought I could share a little bit about myself through examples of my travelling passion.
Here it goes! Are you with me still?
1 – By Air
Nothing beats flying to a faraway destination. I probably have the most Frequent Flyer Miles of all my friends and acquaintances. When I fly, I often search online for seat sales to save the most money on an incredible journey. I also spend most of the time on international flights in the washroom as I get horribly air sick! The other thing is I cannot sleep at all in the plane… I end up watching every movie available haha.
2 – By Train
There are some places in the world that are best viewed from the comfort of a train. I’ve always been fascinated by railways having lived part of my life in a community that was a centre railway hub. At one point in my life I wanted to travel the world only by train… I still do…But I guess I would have to wait a little more… (still on my to do list)
3 – By Foot
Hiking across the country was never all that appealing to me until one summer I found myself doing just that. (I admit I was forced to at first…) I got to say that the freedom of camping wherever with whomever ended up giving me a different appreciation for the world around me. Plus, having lost my driver’s license due to a private matter forced me to learn how to hitchhike!
4 – By Sea
Cruise liners are a lot like floating cities. If you locate the right one you can spend days wandering around the various decks and find all you need to survive without checking out a single port of call. I did this one summer and saw some wonderful parts of the world. That was until they discovered I had snuck on board! ( nah not true…. I am not that wild haha
5 – By Animal
Okay, I admit this is not for everyone. However, I did go through a phase in my life where I craved travel on the back of or being pulled by different animals. Favourites include horseback riding and on an elephant. Near the bottom of that list would be on a camel (I couldn’t walk for days) and by dogsled (alaska).
6 – By Two-Wheels
ok ok, the truth is motocycles freak me out. I know that in some parts of the world it is best known as touring and what really makes this a great way to see things is that you can access locations you can’t get to on four wheels. But I am so scared of motorcycles as I am afraid to get hurt… Don’t ask me, I need to work on that…..one day…
Did You Learn Much About Me?
I never got around to telling you about riding a gondola, tramway, hang glider or zip line, but maybe I’ll share those in a different blog post. I hope you enjoyed hearing about my different travel experiences here and that I inspired you to consider taking a ride on something different for your next vacation or holiday.
Have fun and don’t forget to wear your seatbelt !
